How I Accidentally Fell in Love With the Ocean – by Sepet (Thalassic Scuba)
If you told me back in 2013 that I would one day become a PADI Instructor, I would’ve laughed out loud. Scuba diving wasn’t a dream or a lifelong plan – it was something that found me. On a simple island trip where I tagged along with a friend, I impulsively signed up for a scuba course. Curiosity, a little peer pressure, and perhaps a nudge from fate – that choice led me down a path I never expected and eventually to launching Thalassic Scuba.
The First Breath That Changed My Life
The very first breath I took underwater changed me. Everything slowed down. The hush of bubbles, the soft blue light, fish gliding as if they were part of a calm ballet – it felt like entering a secret, gentle world. That breath didn’t just thrill me; it soothed and grounded me. From that moment I felt a deep connection with the ocean – one that would call me back again and again.
The Turning Point: Why I Decided to Teach
My decision to become an instructor came from something personal and important. Early in my diving experience I witnessed female students being handled in ways that made them uncomfortable. Unnecessary touching and a lack of respect for boundaries are not acceptable. I wanted to change that. I promised myself I would become an instructor who creates a safe, respectful space for women and all students. After years of training, I earned my PADI Instructor certification in 2019 and founded Thalassic Scuba in 2021 with that commitment at the heart of the centre.
Teaching Divers from All Walks of Life
Teaching with Thalassic Scuba has allowed me to meet people from every background – kids aged 10–15, adults in their 20s to late 40s, families, corporate groups, government teams, and travellers from the US, UK, Australia and beyond. But one group will always stay in my heart – the eight students from ISKL (International School Kuala Lumpur).
They came with a “reserved” vibe at first – maybe because they came from well-off families, mostly from the US, UK, and Australia. But over the four days of doing their Open Water course, something beautiful happened.
They opened up.
They laughed.
They learned.
They struggled.
They celebrated.
And on the last day… all eight of them hugged me and cried because it was time to say goodbye.
Until today, it remains one of the sweetest memories of my teaching journey.

The Funny & Challenging Parts
People think teaching scuba is just about going underwater. But every student comes with a unique challenge.
Some are scared of water.
Some can’t clear their mask.
Some panic when they see fish (yes, it happens 😂).
And some are just full of personality!
If I wrote every funny moment and every challenge… you and I would still be sitting here typing until next week.
But every challenge makes teaching meaningful. Every student becomes part of my story.

Why I Still Love Doing This
The ocean gave me peace when I didn’t even know I needed it, and teaching gives me purpose. Watching someone take their first breath underwater, seeing their eyes widen with awe, and watching fear turn into joy – that’s priceless. This connection is the heart of what I do at Thalassic Scuba, and it keeps me excited to teach every time.
